Imre Benkő †

(1943– 2025, Budapest)

He completed the photojournalism course at the Association of Hungarian Journalists’ school. He won gold medals at the World Press Photo competition in 1975 and 1978. He was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Grant in 1992. He has worked in numerous countries worldwide and was represented internationally by the Paris-based Wostok Press between 1991 and 2008. He taught as a parttime lecturer at the Hungarian University of Applied Arts between 1988 and 2000. He participated in exhibitions worldwide. Awards: Béla Balázs Prize (1981), Pulitzer Memorial Prize (1991), Merited Artist (2004), Hungarian Photography Grand Prize (2004), Hungarian Art Prize (2009), Lifetime Achievement Award of the Association of Hungarian Photographers (2013), Outstanding Artist (2016), Prima Primissima Prize (2016), Photojournalism Lifetime Achievement Award (2021), Kossuth Prize (2025). His works can be found in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
